In Shamanism death is not the end it is merely a transition from this time and space to another. Death can be a long, slow process and can be vary challenging for the person who is failing as well as those who are left to care for the person.
There can be various work done to help both parties to find a positive relationship with what is happening.
For someone who knows they are near the end learning how to journey can be a wonderful tool to make your soul and your mind more flexible and open to the concept of a part of yourself going somewhere else. Spending time forgiving and letting go of things that one may be holding onto can be a lightening experience and can make the passage smoother.

For the people who are caring for someone who is in a coma or near death space a shaman can communicate with the soul of the person and can help both parties find peace during the final transition. Leading up to the end there are things that people can do to ease the person in discomfort and to make them feel supported in this transition.

In our current culture death is considered bad and negative and almost a taboo. We don’t talk about it so it becomes something scary and negative. All the fears and negativity that builds through a lifetime is exactly what will make that time feel terrible. It is important to open our minds to this time being a beautiful and sacred transition. We may not know exactly what will happen but embracing it with love and openness will make our experience in the here and now much more healthy and harmonious.

One of the main roles as a shaman is to act as a psycho pomp and help ensure safe passage to the other side. If people are in a traumatic event that ends their life suddenly they often don’t even know that they died and they get stuck in between. The shamans job is to show those people the way and ensure that they make it to the other side. Often people will hang around after death because the living loved ones are unable to let them go. They feel that they are needed and stay stuck in between and can often cause more pain and suffering being attached to a living persons life. The shamans job is to help the surviving family and friends to learn to let go through various rituals or ceremonies to allow the deceased persons soul the freedom to cross over.
